It’s one of the questions we hear most often after dolphins appear nearby: “Captain, why are they following us?”
The truth is, we can’t know exactly what a dolphin is thinking. But marine biologists believe dolphins sometimes ride the pressure waves created by boats because it’s fun and efficient. It allows them to glide through the water using less energy.
Young dolphins often seem especially playful. They’ll dart back and forth, surf the wake, and occasionally leap from the water as if they’re putting on a show.
Of course, they’re not performing for us. They’re simply being dolphins. That’s part of what makes these encounters so memorable. We’re getting a glimpse into the natural behavior of wild animals that have lived in the waters near Panama City Beach long before any of us arrived.
Capt. Jess’s Local Dolphin Insight
I’ve had guests ask if the dolphins know we’re watching them. I don’t know the answer to that. What I do know is that the excitement on the boat is contagious whenever they decide to join us for a while.
