One of the things that makes Shell Island so special is that you never know what nature has in store. Dolphins may steal the spotlight, but they’re far from the only wildlife you’ll encounter. Depending on the day, guests may spot pelicans diving for fish, herons wading along the shoreline, stingrays gliding through shallow water, schools of fish darting beneath the surface, and tiny ghost crabs racing across the sand. Occasionally we even see manatees swimming in the Bay.
Children often become fascinated by the little things: a hermit crab tucked inside a shell, a sand dollar washed ashore, or tracks left behind by creatures that visited the beach before sunrise. Every trip is different. That’s one of the reasons families return again and again. Nature doesn’t perform on command, and every outing offers something new to discover.
Capt. Jess’s Local Wildlife Insight
I’ve watched guests spend an entire trip talking about a dolphin encounter, while others couldn’t stop smiling over the tiny ghost crab they chased down the beach. Sometimes the smallest discoveries become the biggest memories.
